A rescue centre, like ours, is never supposed to be a destination in and of itself. It’s intended to be more like the railway platform upon which one waits – briefly – while swapping trains mid-journey. It can be rehabilitative, it can bring comfort and ease, it can – sometimes – be stress-inducing, but it is never supposed to be anything more than a temporary lodging, a place for one to catch their breath while waiting for a forever home.

However, some animals – like Sianco – struggle to see it as such.

When the opportunity arose for him to fly the nest, Sianco didn’t know what to do. Or how to cope. It may seem counterintuitive that going to a home that was quiet and calm would cause such stress, but when his sense of normality has been so warped by life experience – perhaps it’s no surprise that he struggled. Whilst a kennels might be dull and predictable – the same things happening at the same times, on different days – these are precisely the attributes that Sianco desires. For him, homely novelties such as televisions, radios, kettles and so forth, are baffling and scary contraptions.

In our care, Sianco has been a pleasure. Sweet and attentive, quiet and clean, nice and easy. But in the home, he became unsettled and unsure. What should’ve been his moment of wing-spreading freedom instead, to Sianco, felt like entrapment. Anyone looking to re-home Sianco will need to be prepared to let him settle at his own, potentially slow, pace. To let him be. To let him get his head around the shift without too much pressure being applied. He will make a fabulous fireside-dog, a superb sofa-dog, a home-dog par excellence, but it might take time. Life has taught him the value of predictability and of routine. Life still needs to teach him the value of love, your love. He needs to find out that there are wonders beyond our confining walls.
