It’s a wonderful day, unseasonably warm and still. I immerse myself in it. Marney is sitting before me, smiling somewhat vacantly, while above me stretches a clear spring sky, cerulean blue save for a series of dove-white clouds blowing through it. My eyes flick from one to the other until they meld and switch: before me, pawing at the ground, now sits a puff of cloud and, high up above, Marney looks down and smiles. There is something indelibly cloud-like about her appearance and her manner, they’re hard to tell apart.  

True, she’s no wispy cirrus, thin and insubstantial, nor is she a dull, grey stratus, thick with damp; Marney is more like a billowing cumulus, rotund and fluffy, swelling outwards like a burst of candy floss or a puff of cotton wool. She portends no storms but only the onset of fair weather: calm, still and peaceful. Her walk is steady, plodding and silent, her tail bobbing with every stride; her movements are gradual - like the passage of a celestial body through the heavens, and no less beautiful. 

I reach my hand towards her and it vanishes within the thickness of her fur, soon my wrist and forearm follow in its wake; eventually I reach the warm dog beneath and scratch and tickle at her; her tongue falls outwards like a tapestry unfurling itself - and she smiles a smile that contains all the brightness of the day in it. If she is a cloud, I wish to be enveloped by her - and my tears of happiness shall fall like rain.
